Save-rhino drive

DIPENDRA BADUWAL

BHARATPUR, JUN 17 -
A week after Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal directed authorities to intensify efforts to protect rhinos, Natural Resources and Means Committee of the Legislature-Parliament arrived in Chitwan on Wednesday.

The eight-member committee led by its chief Shanta Chaudhary held consultations on Thursday with security forces deployed in Chitwan National Park (CNP) and other authorities concerned over the unabated rhino poaching.

They held talks with Nepal Army personnel posted at Dumariya and Jarneli posts and with others regarding conservation of the endangered species and the reasons behind poaching.

The team members also reached out to wildlife activists in Saurah. In response, the committee was told to set up security posts each in one kilometre section of CNP and deploy security forces who were trained on wildlife conservation.

The team also inspected the rhino poaching site and is scheduled to talk to the wardens at Kasara and Chief District Officer of Chitwan on Friday. Eight rhinos were killed in CNP within the past two months.
