Maoist SC Meeting
- Most members want party at helm
KATHMANDU, JUN 17 -
A majority of Standing Committee members of the UCPN (Maoist) on Thursday laid stress on initiatives to lead a national consensus government rather than sitting in the opposition or resuming a “people’s revolt”.
Commenting on Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s political document in the ongoing politburo meeting, the members said the party should lead the government to complete the statute writing and peace processes.
In the meeting on Thursday, Standing Committee members Barshaman Pun, Ameek Sherchan and Top Bahadur Rayamajhi suggested Dahal lead the government. They said taking other decisions rather than leading the unity government will be “suicidal” for the party.
Standing Committee members Netra Bikram Chanda, Ram Bahadur Thapa and Narayan Kaji Shrestha who represent a hardliner group within the party also supported Bhattarai’s proposal to form a national consensus government.
“We spent the entire year demanding a national consensus government. Therefore, it is high time we fulfil our past commitments rather than seek other alternatives,” a Maoist standing committee member told the Post.
In the meeting, except for Vice-chairman Mohan Baidhya, Dev Gurung, Krishna Bahadur Mahara and CP Gajurel, almost all Standing Committee members asked the party leadership to take initiatives to lead the government.
Gajurel also supported the Baidhya group, while Spokesman Dinanath Sharma is yet to comment on Dahal’s document. Stressing a national consensus government led by the party, Bhattarai has opposed Baidhya’s proposal to resume “people’s revolt”.
