Callous govt deprives Doti of vital drugs

MOHAN SHAHI

DOTI, JUN 17 -
The government hospitals and health posts in Doti have been reeling under acute shortage of essential medicines for the past one month.

Thanks to the shortage of medicines that the government provides free of cost, the increasing numbers of patients have been deprived of treatment.

The drug crisis has hit hard locals of remote areas. Either they have to site at home enduring the pain or visit private clinics in the district headquarters.

“Whom to blame -- the patients or the authorities concerned for the shortage of free medicines in the hospitals?” a patient questioned, adding that it was the sheer negligence of the government.

Almost all health institutions, including the District Hospital, are running out of the essential medicines.

The District Public Health Office has put all the blame on the Department

of Health for creating the problem.

“The department delayed medicine procurement process. We bought some medicines ourselves and distributed,” said District Public Health Officer Chunamani Bhandari. He said the health office was not allowed to buy medicines as needed.

Though the health authority had purchased drugs on February by opening the bidding, the medicines hardly lasted for one month. Bhandari said it takes nearly a month to buy medicines.

Beside the district hospital, there are two primary health posts, 10 health posts and 39 sub-health posts in the district.
