Govt decision not politics-driven: CNI
KATHMANDU, JUN 16 -
Disciplinary Committee coordinator of Federation of NEpalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) Rabi Bhakta Shrestha held dialogue with Confedeation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) president The Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) to settle the row between two sides on Wednesday.
Relations between the two apex bodies of the Nepali private sector soured after the FNCCI initiated disciplinary action against Chaudhary saying his actions regarding the Certificate of Origin (CoO) issue had defamed the FNCCI. Chaudhary is a past president of the FNCCI.
Shrestha said that they were trying to forge consensus on CoO issue.
The issue over the CoO had mounted after the government on May 21 permitted the CNI and the Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) too to issue CoO for third-country exports ending the monopoly of the FNCCI.
Meanwhile, the CNI has stated that the government's decision to allow it to issue CoO for the export of Nepali goods had not been inspired by politics but by the right to a level playing field.
Amid the escalating row over the CoO, a CNI delegation led by its president Binod Chaudhary met with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Wednesday and urged him to implement effectively the decision regarding issuance of CoO for exports to India.
"We asked the prime minister to end the dispute and start issuance of CoO for exports to India effectively," said Chaudhary emerging from the meeting with the prime minister. "He is totally positive in this regard."
The CNI has intensified its lobbying with the political parties after the FNCCI met with the prime minister and UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Sunday. During a meeting with FNCCI, the prime minister had promised that the government would adopt a one-window policy regarding CoO. In a meeting with the Maoists, Dahal had supported the FNCCI's stance. On Tuesday, a CNI delegation had met with Sushil Koirala, acting chairman of the Nepali Congress, to seek his support to settle the issue.
