Waste disposal row in bin
KATHMANDU, JUN 15 -
Garbage collection in Kathmandu Valley will resume from Wednesday following a five-point agreement between the agitating locals and Solid Waste Management and Resource Mobilisation Centre (SWMRMC) on Tuesday.
“We signed a five-point deal with the protesters and it has cleared the way for garbage collection from Wednesday,” said Deependra Oli, legal advisor for SWMRMC.
The deal includes compensation for land acquisition at the dumping site within the current fiscal year, search for alternate dumping site as Sisdol and Aletar are going to be filled, allocation of adequate budget for Bhakundetar-Aletar roadway and blacktopping the Ratmate roadway.
“In addition to these demands, staff at the local health centres and teachers at local schools will be increased,” said Oli.
Following the agreement, Kathmandu Metropolitan City plans to collect garbage from Wednesday. “They (protesters) have shown commitments to let garbage dump at Aletar and Sisdol,” said Rabin Man Shrestha, chief at KMC’s Environment Management Department. “We will resume garbage collection from tomorrow (Wednesday).”
Shree Ram Dhungana, a representative of protesters of Ratamate near Sisdol said they would not obstruct the vehicles transporting waste to the dumping site. “As the government
has expressed commitment to fulfill our demands, we call off our protests,” he said.
