Syangja coffee comes of age
SYANGJA, JUN 15 -
The US is emerging as a major buyer for coffee producers here with 10 tons out of their total exports of 40 tons going to the American market.
“Our coffee is organic and has a good aroma, so it is a popular brand in the US,” said Bodh Raj Aryal, treasurer of the Coffee Entrepreneurs Association.
Japan and Korea used to be big importers previously. The farmers also hope to publicize Nepal as a tourist destination in the international arena through their coffee.
Some farmers are exporting coffee granules to Japan through personal contact while in the past they used to ship their products through companies like Highland Coffee Promotion Company, Everest Coffee Mill and Plantek Coffee. This has increased their earnings.
Aryal said that farmers expected to earn Rs. 10 million this year. They have projected greater earnings as there has been a significant increase in coffee production this year.
Farmers of two municipalities and 40 VDCs of the district are engaged in coffee production. Three of the VDCs have been selected as modal VDCs by the One Village One Product programme. Senior agriculture development officer Chet Nath Adhikari said that the district was suitable for growing coffee due to its climate and geography.
“The district’s moist hilly region is the factor behind the good aroma of the coffee which has made it so popular,” added Adhikari.
