Exports down 10pc
KATHMANDU, JUN 15 -
Nepal’s exports have declined by 10.3 percent in the first three quarters of the current fiscal year in comparison to the same period last year.
According to the Trade and Export Promotion Centre, woollen carpets were down 28.8 percent, readymade garments 22 percent and pashmina 23 percent.
The contribution of exports to the country’s total international trade amounts to 13.2 percent while imports account for 86.8 percent.
Surendra Bir Malakar, president of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce said the ongoing political situation is the main factor behind the decline in the international trade. “Daily power cuts, bandas and general strikes have seriously hampered the export of Nepali products.
He added that the business community had asked the government time and again to help boost exports.
