Waste disposal site turning into a park

KATHMANDU, JUN 12 -
People residing in the corridor of the Bagmati river in Sanepa are heaving a sigh of relief after a stinging dumping site there has started turning into a beautiful park.

The park is the result of the joint efforts put in by the Lalitpur Sub-Metropolitan City and locals of ward number 1, 2 and 3 in Sanepa.

The construction of the park, spread across 40 ropanis of land, is estimated to be completed in the next eight years at a cost of Rs. 40 million. 

“The plants in the corridor  have greatly helped balance environment,” said Rajendra Thapa Magar, chairman of Manmohan Memorial Park Management Committee. “Tree species suitable for soil quality are planted.” Committee’s Secretary Rajesh Maharjan said  sand extraction from the Bagmati have affected environment.

Officials said the construction of the park will be completed in 15 phases, of which three phases have been done so far.
