Power outage woes to hype
KATHMANDU, JUN 12 -
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has increased load-shedding hours from 42 hours to 54 hours a week, with effect from Monday.
As per the new schedule, there will be nine hours load-shedding for four days a week and six hours on the rest of the days. Currently, there is a six-hour power-cut daily.
According to Sher Singh Bhat, chief of Department of Systems Operation and Maintenance of NEA, due to receding water level in the rivers feeding the hydropower projects, NEA decided to increase load-shedding hours.
Meanwhile, the only storage-type hydropower project Kulekhani Reservoir, is going to be completely shutdown for the next 15 days from Sunday on account of repair and maintenance work. Both Kulekhani I and II contribute 46 MW to the national grid.
The current peak power demand is around 830 MW while the total supply is around 680 MW. However, in case of onset of monsoon in the next couple of days, the protracted load-shedding schedule will not be implemented, Bhat said. “If there is good rainfall tomorrow or in the coming days, there will be no additional increase in load-shedding hours,” he said.
