Govt gearing to muzzle foreign channels

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JUN 09 -
The Ministry of Information and Communications (MOIC) is all set to regulate the foreign channels that have drawn widespread public criticism for broadcasting “obscene” contents and videos.

Unregulated broadcast of “such unacceptable materials” have had great impacts on the people, especially children and women. Some months ago, the government had amended Broadcasting Regulation 2052 to address this issue.

According to the new provision, foreign TV stations have to get permission to downlink their channels in the Nepali soil.

Narayan Prasad Regmi, MoIC Spokesperson informed that 81 foreign channels have submitted proposals seeking permission to downlink their channels. “We will give them permission after verification and will cancel those channels

that refuse to get downlink permission,” said Regmi.

BBC World Service and CNN are among those international television channels that have sought permissions to downlink.

However, many channels are yet to submit proposals to acquire the downlink permission. Language and contents of the programmes will be the major bases for issuing permission. According to the ministry, Nepal 1 Channel, which is being broadcast from India, has not submitted application seeking downlink permission.

“Nepal 1is not a Nepali channel but an Indian Channel of Nepali language that should get the permission to downlink,” said Regmi.

Senior TV journalist Durga Nath Sharma said the government should make effective mechanism to regulate foreign TV channels. “Many foreign channels have impacted the psychology of children, the youth and the general public alike. So restriction is necessary,” said Sharma.
