CIAA sniffs graft at TIA
KATHMANDU, JUN 08 -
On suspicion that a huge amount of money might be misused, the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) on Tuesday seized documents related to the upgrading of the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).
The CIAA suspects that millions of rupees given by the Asian Development Bank is likely to be misused. “We seized the documents related to the TIA improvement project on the suspicion of probable misuse of a huge amount,” said CIAA Spokesman Ishwori Poudel.
According to an investigation officer, Shambhu Construction P. Ltd and officials at the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) were trying to embezzle a large amount of money through negotiations. CAAN had awarded Shambhu Construction the contract to level the field inside TIA for car parking in 1999. The government has released only Rs 6.7 million to complete the project but the contractor submitted a bill for Rs 54.7 million in 2001. Technicians have evaluated that only Rs 7 million would have been sufficient for the work.
