CC meets to discuss way ahead
KATHMANDU, JUN 07 -
The Constitutional Committee (CC) held a meeting to discuss its future roadmap on Monday for the first time after the term extension of the Constituent Assembly (CA).
During the three-hour meeting, CA members stressed the need for formulating a time-bound plan to prepare the first draft of the new constitution. They said consensus among the three major political parties was vital for drafting the new constitution within the extended period of one year. Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party lawmaker Hridayesh Tripathi said the CA had failed to come up with a constitution due to the politics of forming and toppling governments with a simple majority. He said a consensus government can help the writing of the constitution.
Nepali Congress lawmaker Prakash Man Singh said the CA had failed to deliver as the Maoists had ignored various aspects of the peace process. The CC is responsible for preparing the first draft of the constitution but is yet to start the task since eight CA committees have yet to submit their reports.
