Marriage robs two women of identity
POKHARA, JUN 07 -
Two Nepali women married off to Tibetan refugees are facing an identity crisis. They neither can obtain Nepali citizenship nor the refugee status.
Anita Thapa Lama, 40, and Hira BK Lama, 30, are out of luck after authorities concerned of both Nepal and China did not grant them necessary documents.
They have been taking a shelter with their husbands in Chorapatan-based Tibetan refugee camp, Pokhara.
“We are facing identity crisis since we don’t have citizenship documents,” lamented the victims. The authorities, they said, paid no heeds to their woes even though they frequently visited the district administration office.
Anita had married Bhujung Lama, a Tibetan citizen, 10 years ago. She has been without a job due to lack of the citizenship certificate.
“I am having a hard time to support my family as husband’s daily wage is insufficient to eke out a living,” she added.
Her two daughters and son also have the same tale to tell. They have been deprived of their rights due to necessary documents. “Our future is dark as we do not have the citizenship,” bemoaned Anita’s daughter Dawa Lama, 21.
