Woman brands servant for ‘theft’
KATHMANDU, JUN 02 -
Tension ran high for three hours at Tenzing Chowk in Kapan after wife of a police inspector burnt the face and hand of a domestic help with a hot iron.
Ghanashyam Mahato (14), who hailed from Bahundangi in Jhapa, was tortured by Sushila Pathak, wife of Inspector Ek Raj Pathak.
Quoting Pathak, Sub-Inspector Ashok Limbu at Metropolitan Police Sector Kapan said Mahato had stolen Rs. 7,000 and had refused to return the whole of the amount, hence the punishment.
Police have taken Sushila and her two children into custody. A local requesting anonymity said people had gathered at Pathak’s house since the afternoon pressing the family to take Mahato to hospital. “The refused to do so despite our requests,” said a source. A police team reached the incident site at 5 p.m. after the locals started pelting stones at the house. An additional support was called for to take the situation under control, said SI Limbu.
Police fired 12 tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. At least three policemen and eight locals were injured in the incident. “The situation was taken under control following the arrest of the family members,” said Limbu. “In our bid to take the family members and Mahato under control, the mass snatched Mahato from us,” he clarified.
The locals later took Mahato to Kanti Hospital for treatment. SP Ramesh Kharel, Chief of Metropolitan Police Range Hanumandhoka, said Sushila was held guilty.
