Inbound tourists up 6pc in May

Visitor arrivals by air in May have increased by 6 percent to 26,634 compared to the same month last year.

According to the figures released by the Immigration Office, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), arrivals from China and India, a major tourist market for the country, have achieved sustained growth.

Since June 2009, arrivals from India and China have registered double-digit growth.

Visitor arrivals from India have increased by 4.3 percent, which showed sustained growth this year, except for a soft decline in April. A total 9,726 Indian tourists arrived in Nepal in May compared to 9,324 arrivals in the same period last year.

In the first five months of the year, 37,325 Indian tourists have arrived in Nepal by air compared to 34,537 last year.

China, another major source market, also recorded double-digit growth of 35 percent. In May 1,024, Chinese tourists arrived in Nepal by air compared to 772 in the same period last year.

According to TIA figures, in the first five months of the year, 11,271 Chinese tourists came to Nepal compared to 6,583 in the same period last year.

Arrivals from the South Asian region grew 6 percent with Bangladesh recording a rise of 30 percent and Pakistan 26.3 percent. Sri Lanka recorded a negative growth of 53.7 percent.

Visitor arrivals from Japan registered a growth of 13.9 percent. However, arrivals from Asia (other than South Asia) declined marginally by 3.7 percent.

Inbound from South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand registered a negative growth of 14 percent, 30.3 percent, 32.7 percent and 50 percent respectively. The European market registered an overall growth of 10.8 percent. Arrivals from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, Czech Republic and Poland were up by 4.9 percent, 14.2 percent, 47.5 percent, 12.3 percent, 20.9 percent, 75 percent and 278.6 percent respectively.

However, visitor arrivals from France and Italy dipped marginally by 0.7 percent and 1.9 percent respectively while Spain and Sweden were down by 18 percent and 17.7 percent respectively.

Arrivals from the US were up 10.4 percent. Australia, New Zealand and Canada showed a negative growth of 9.8 percent, 2.9 percent and 3.2 percent respectively.
