IRO to nab VAT dodgers
BIRATNAGAR, MAY 29 -
Inland Revenue Office (IRO) here has started taking action against those wilfully evading value added tax (VAT). In the first phase, the office has started legal action against nine such business firms.
Toyanath Sapkota, an official at IRO, said the office had suspended the bank transactions including their import and export dealings of these firms. He said the office was compelled to take legal action after these firms refused to pay the taxes even after being informed repeatedly.
RMD Metal Industry, Sagarmatha Flour Indus-try, Pioneer Trading, KBU Zenis Industry, National Plastic Industry, Give Overseas, Agrawal Industries, Baba Umbrella and Mira Plastic and Industries are those business firms taken into legal action in the first phase.
According to Sapkota, RMD Metal not paid Rs 3.9 million, Sagarmatha Flour Rs 7.6 million, Pioneer Trading Rs 1.3 million, KBU Zenis Industry Rs 3.4 million and National Plastic Industry Rs 3.14 million..
Likewise Give Over-seas, Agrawal Industries, Baba Umbrella and Mira Plastic and Industries which have not paid Rs 4.7 million, Rs 1.6 million, Rs 1.73 million and Rs 2.37 million, respectively. Around 1,120 business firms in Biratnagar have not paid over 40 million VAT.
Of the total business firms under the IRO scanner, the above-named nine firms are being brought into the tax net in the first phase. Sapkota said the remaining business organisations would be gradually penalized.
"We are keeping our eyes peeled to take action against the rest of the willful defaulters." said Sapkota.
Meanwhile, income tax worth Rs 292.6 million is still to be raised from different business entrepreneurs in Biratnagar. Sapkota said that the office had forwarded letter to 168 business entrepreneurs to pay the taxes by the end of the current fiscal year.
