Tharuhat lands on MJF-L feet

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, MAY 26 -
Politics makes strange bedfellows. Madhes politics took a new turn yet again on Wednesday with a tie-up between Madhesi Janadhikar Forum Loktantrik (MJF-L) and Tharuhat Joint Struggle Committee.

Both parties have made an agreement to work together. “We will work for the people,” said Bijaya Gachhadar, Deputy Prime Minister and MJF-L Chairman.

Interestingly on Jan 27, Tharuhat had formed a tie-up with Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) led by Upendra Yadav to launch a joint movement for making the entire Tarai a single autonomous state in federal set-up.

The flimsy friendship couldn't last long. Tharuhat later withdrew its support to MJF, claiming that “it went in Maoist line”.

However, Gachhadar's party and Tharuhat in their agreement haven't mentioned they will fight for a single Tarai state. “We haven't worked it out to that end,” said Tharuhat chief Laxman Tharu.

They have struck a four-point agreement. Among others, they have pledged to jointly lobby for proportionate representation of people in every state organ on the basis of ethnicity.

Condemning the draft concept of 14 states proposed by Committee on State Restructuring and Distribution of State Power, the new allies have agreed to work for secular states and press the government for implementation of agreements made with several groups.

They have also decided to organise mass meetings in Kailali, Banke, Birgunj, Chitwan, Saptari and Biratnagar in the near future.
