Road repair being rushed as fiscal draws to close
KATHMANDU, MAY 26 -
Road maintenance work is going on at full swing in the Kathmandu Valley spurred by the approaching end of the fiscal year. Officials of the Road Division Kathmandu said that about 70 percent of the work has been completed.
Currently, portions of the roads between Samakhusi and Gongabu, Lainchaur and Sorhakhutte and Durbar Marg are being repaired. Similarly, the bridges at Sinamangal, Koteshwor, Naya Bazaar, Chamati, Tokha, Danchi, Dhobi Khola and Sangam Chok are being restored.
The government has allocated Rs. 500 million for road maintenance and Rs. 50 million for repairing bridges for the current fiscal year. The Road Division has spent about half of the allocated budget so far.
"The remaining allocation of Rs. 270 million will be adequate to complete the projects planned for the current fiscal year," said Balram Mishra, chief of the Road Division.
Repair and maintenance works at different places of the Ring Road between Chabahil and Kalanki, the road surrounding the Singha Durbar and the stretch between Tripureshwor and Teku have been completed. Likewise, the portions connecting Gaushala and Old Baneshwor, Tinkune and Bijuli Bazaar, Bhimsengola and Dilli Bazaar, Maharajgunj and Bansbari and Lainchaur and Lazimpat have also been completed, said the Road Division.
The Road Division has been conducting repairs on 74 roads in the Kathmandu Valley. Maintenance includes metalling, gravelling and levelling. "Roads require regular repair and maintenance as per the density of traffic movement," said Mishra. "Roads carrying heavy traffic need repairs every five years."
