Nepal takes up eviction issue with New Delhi
KATHMANDU, MAY 23 -
The Nepali Embassy in New Delhi has taken up the issue of the eviction of Nepali speaking people from Meghalaya. Around 15, 000 people of the community have been forced by the indigenous Khasis to leave the state.
Until Saturday, 15,000 Nepali speaking people have fled Meghalaya after the clashes between the indigenous Khasis and ethnic Nepalis. Twenty five percent of Nepali speakers residing in Meghalaya have been displaced in the wake of violence, said Rohit Gautam, editor of Assam-based Sapariwar magazine.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) also sought all related details and conditions of Nepali citizens residing in the state through its New Delhi based mission.
“We have forwarded an inquiry about the situation of Nepali citizens in the state. We are yet to get a reply,” Durga Bhattarai, MoFA spokesperson said. “Our Delhi based mission is in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs of India and the issue has been taken up with the concerned authorities there,” another MoFA official said. The Ministry and Nepal’s mission in Delhi are closely following developments, he said.
The displaced are taking refuge in Assam including Karbi-Anglong, Siltar, Boko and Jayanti Hills. Sources said another indigenous group, the Garos, has also started attacking Nepali speakers.
The ministry also sought details from its mission whether there was any Nepali casualty in the plane crash in Mangalore, India.
