Two more ‘dead’ in Meghalaya

POST REPORT

SILIGURI, MAY 21 -
Two persons of Nepali-origin were reportedly killed by tribal Khasis at Byrnihat of Meghalaya state in northeastern India on Thursday night.

Rohit Gautam, editor of Sapariwar, a Nepali magazine published from Assam, said a group of Khasi people burnt the two persons to death while they slept in a cowshed. Khasis had killed three Nepali speaking people in Langapih on Sunday.

More than 3,000 Nepali speaking people have fled their homes in Langapih fearing attacks from the indigenous Khasi people.

TR Joshi of the Meghalaya-based Gorkha Welfare Centre said the fleeing population has been seeking refuge in the neighbouring state of Assam. The number of people leaving Langapih could rise significantly in the coming days, he said.

On Monday, the Khasis issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the

Nepali speaking people to leave the village,

situated along the Meghalaya-Assam border, following a clash between Khasis and Nepali speaking community over a land dispute.
