Two tons of trash collected at Everest
KATHMANDU, MAY 20 -
A team of Extreme Everest Expedition 2010 (EEE), a campaign to remove garbage on Everest, has brought down more than 2 tons of trash from a height of more than 8,000 m.
EEE is the first ever team to attempt to clean up the treacherous region known as death zone, the organisers of the campaign said.
A team of 20 Sherpas led by Namgyal Sherpa under the coordination of Chakra Karki had set out for Everest base camp on April 25 with the aim of bringing down waste left behind by climbing expeditions in the death zone of the world's highest mountain.
On the occasion of International Mount Everest Day, the EEE will gather 100 volunteers from all over the world to carry whatever amount of garbage they can -- 1-10 kg -- down from base camp to Lukla and to Kathmandu, in a gesture of commitment to Lukla and the sacred mountain.
The EEE is also collaborating with the organisers of Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon to request its marathon runners
to carry a token amount of garbage with them from Everest base camp down to Namche Bazaar, stated Nepal Investment Bank which is the main sponsor of EEE.
General manager Jyoti Pandey said the bank had a policy of continuing support to efforts towards environmental protection.
