Nepali speaking community in northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya have started fleeing their homes after the indigenous Khasis intensified attacks on them.

Sources said a large number of Indian nationals of Nepali origin and Nepali migrant workers fled the area due to the increasing threats and attacks.

The Khasis killed three Nepali speaking people at Langapi village on Monday following a clash on Sunday in which seven people were killed in police intervention. The irate Khasis burnt one Dhanapati Bastola to death while he was staying at a cowshed.

TR Joshi, a member of the Meghalaya Gorkha Welfare Centre, said another Khasi organisation, Hanam, also issued an ultimatum to the Nepalis to leave Meghalaya within 15 days at a press meet on Tuesday.

“Most of the ethnic Nepalis and migrant workers fled Langapi and Juwai,” said Joshi over phone.

Following Monday’s clashes, the Khasis issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Nepali community to flee Langapi that borders Meghalaya and Assam.

Both Meghalaya and Assam have been laying claim to the bordering Langapi village since long.

The total population of Nepali speaking people in Langapi and Juwai is about 200,000.
