Blame game slaughters traffic system

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, MAY 18 -
Prolonged power outage and solar units going out of order apart, traffic lights at major intersections in the Capital have been on the blink because of the authorities’ tendency to pass the buck. Since, the last three months, this is the state of affairs.

Naturally, this has only added to traffic woes in a city that does not have roads in proportion to the number of vehicles and pedestrians are lucky to cross intersections. “Absence of traffic signals is

frustrating,” said Anuj Adhikari of Baneshwor. “This puts our lives at risk. When you cross the road,

you never know when a vehicle might hit you.”

Authorities are unfazed by this sorry state of affairs. “The Department of Roads (DoR) is responsible for the maintenance of traffic lights and signals,” said DIG Binod Singh, incharge of Metropolitan Traffic Police Division No. 3. “Our job is only to regulate the traffic system.”

However, the DoR holds the Kathmandu Road Division Office (KRDO) responsible for the task. Ganesh Kandel, chief of Road and Traffic Unit at the DoR claimed that the responsibility had been handed over to the KRDO. “I don’t know why work has not started yet,” he said.

KRDO sings a song of its own. “The DoR wants to get shirk its duties by handing over things to us. We have not fully accepted the responsibility yet,” said Bal Ram Mishra, KRDO chief.
