Call to expand broadband limit
KATHMANDU, MAY 17 -
Minister for Information and Communications Shankar Pokhrel has unde-rscored the need to expand broadband internet service to rural areas as it has emerged as one of the crucial tools for development.
Addressing an interaction programme on Draft of Broadband Policy 2010 organised by the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, coinciding with World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, he said, “The policy should emphasise how to expand data service in rural areas and benefit the people.”
Minister Pokhrel said that only expansion of voice service would not contribute to the GDP.
He added that special emphasis should be given to expansion in the Broadband Policy. The policy will be finalised as soon as possible and forwarded to the cabinet for its endorsement, said Kailash Neupane, spokesperson of the authority.
The policy is considered to be key to development of information and communication technology and implementation of e-governance by making service delivery easy and effective in remote areas by expanding wireless broadband internet.
The policy will define the minimum speed in Kbps — uplink and downlink and guarantee the quality of service — throughput on a shared or dedicated basis — on services that a service provider offers.
Once the policy is implemented, subscribers can choose from broadband or non-broadband internet service like dial-up. The quality of service will be guaranteed by the service providers if a customer chooses to subscribe to broadband.
