Is it Gautam’s swansong?

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, MAY 16 -
The CPN (UML) has directed its controversial Vice-Chairman Bam Dev Gautam either to retract his stance or face suspension for violating party rules and regulations.

Pro-Maoist UML leader Gautam is widely criticised within his own party for violating party rules after forwarding a memorandum to Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal demanding Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal’s resignation through email addresses belonging to Maoists. The UML called a central committee meeting to resolve the memorandum row.

“The party has given him a last chance to correct his past mistakes. If he flouts party directives, there will be no alternative but to suspend or expel him from the party,” said UML CC member Karna Bahadur Thapa.

Under mounting pressure

from senior UML leaders, Gautam submitted a written clarification to the Central Disciplinary Commission. However, the Commission on Friday asked him to re-clarify the issues within seven days. It said his response was not satisfactory.

“It is not necessary to do so. All I did was try to resolve the current political crisis,” Gautam said in Sunday’s meeting. “I will reply when you resolve the political crisis.” Gautam’s stand is Prime Minister Nepal is the main cause of the current political stalemate.

UML’s statute states that if any leader does not follow party directives to correct his past mistakes, he can be suspended for two years or expelled altogether. “Gautam has only these two options,” added Thapa.
