Farmers take to sunflower farming

RSS

SUNSARI, MAY 15 -
Lured by high return, an increasing number of farmers in the buffer zone areas of Sunsari are taking to sunflower farming.

More than 100 farmers at Aamduwa, Haripur, Laukahi, Madhuvan and other VDCs are into commercial sunflower farming. Charmed by decent productivity of sunflower in several parts of the neighbouring country, India, farmers started this new venture.

Most of the southern parts in Sunsari are yellowish at present as sunflowers have grown mature. Farmers are preparing for harvest.

According to District Agriculture Office, Sunsari, sunflower is a fast growing crop and takes only three months to grow. Sunflower farming was done randomly in some areas earlier and the commercial cultivation started from this year, it said.  Compare to previous years, the acreage of sunflower farming has increased significantly and villagers are making good profit out of sunflower cultivation.

Sunflower produced here gives minimum of 12 quintals per bigha. The cash crop is now seen as an alternative to the rising prices of edible oil here.

The agriculture authority said the increasing demand of sunflower oil was the main cause for encouraging farmers to cultivate sunflower.
