Water tankers rake in the lolly

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, MAY 13 -
The persistent problem of water shortage in Kathmandu Valley has proved to be a boon for water tankers.

Water tankers are in high demand owing to increasing demand of water fuelled by growing population, drying up water sources and failing government utility.

A case in point is private tankers alone fulfil about 25 percent of the total water demand in the valley. They supply around 100 tankers of water everyday in dry season. The demand slightly decreases in rainy season.

Tankers owners say the water business is booming. “I am in this business for the last 18 years and make Rs. 25,000-30,000 a month, enough to raise my family of nine,” says Pancharam Tamang, an owner of two water tankers.

Valley Drinking Water Tanker Entrepreneurs, an association of  private tanker operators says it has about 600 tankers under its fold. According to Association’s chairman Bishnu Dhakal the business peaks in dry seasons. Tanker entrepreneurs remain busy supplying water throughout the year, Dhakal says.
