UNMIN gets four months’ extension
KATHMANDU, MAY 13 -
The UN Security Council (UNSC) has extended the tenure of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) until Sept. 15, instructing the political mission to begin necessary arrangements for its withdrawal within its new mandate.
The Security Council meeting unanimously took the decision to this effect in New York on Wednesday. The government had earlier requested the UNSC for extending UNMIN’s tenure for four months. Its current mandate expires on Saturday.
The Security Council has called on the political parties to take full advantage of the expertise and readiness of UNMIN to support the peace process and implement the outstanding aspects of the mission’s mandate. It has also decided that UNMIN, working with parties, should immediately begin to make necessary arrangements for its withdrawal, including handing over any residual monitoring responsibilities by Sept. 15.
The Security Council has also urged the government and the main opposition UCPN (Maoist) to agree and implement an action plan with clear bench marks for the integration and rehabilitation of former Maoist combatants. The UNSC has also called upon the political parties to work in the spirit of cooperation, consensus and compromise to enable the country to move to a peaceful, democratic and prosperous future.
