81 indigenous nationalities
KATHMANDU, MAY 13 -
The high level government taskforce entrusted with reviewing the enlistment of indigenous nationalities has suggested the government to enlist 81 nationalities in its indigenous list.
Earlier, the government had enlisted 59 nationalities, but massive protests by several communities such as Tharu and Muslim forced it to kneel down. As a result, the government pulled out the list. According to the government statistics in 2001, there are more than 101 nationalities in Nepal.
Submitting its report to Minister for Local Development Purna Kumar Sherma in the presence of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Thursday, the panel has advised the government to enlist 81 nationalities in the indigenous list. Chhetri and Brahmin are not in the list.
The government on April 11 last year had formed task force led by Om Gurung to review and update the indigenous people’s list.
The new record has been prepared on the basis of the United Nations’ definition of indigenous nationality.
The United Nations has defined indigenous nationalities as ethnic groups possessing their own distinct social, economic and political group such as distinct language, culture and beliefs.
