Swimming pools

  • Summer Salvation
POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, MAY 12 -
Swimming pools in the valley have started playing the role of sanctuaries as the summer heat has started taking over. Most of these pools are seen packed with large number of people these hot summer days.

“The number of people visiting has increased drastically this summer”, said Kul Bahadur KC, instructor and senior life guard at the Mahendra police health club.”Approximately 400 to 500 people visit during the weekdays whereas the number exceeds 1000 on Saturdays.”

A 14 year old Raj Kumar Gautam visits the pool twice a week with the intention of keeping his body fit. “I have come here with my friends to escape the unforgiving heat and to keep myself healthy.” said Gautam. Apart from a larger population of regularly visiting teenagers, children and middle aged people can also be spotted in a considerable number. 44 year old Nabin Shakya is an example among many of the older population who swim regularly.

The price for admittance varies according to the facility a swimming complex provides. Mahendra Police Club is a government owned fitness center and has set the price of Rs. 150 for three hours for an adult. Students receive a concession of Rs. 50 as well as unlimited hours pass. The water is recycled everyday and has good hygiene standards. The swimming pool at the Everest Hotel is comparatively expensive and charges Rs. 500 for the same number of hours and children under 12 years of age are given fifty percent discount. The pool is regularly treated with chlorine for eliminating germs harmful for the human body.

Swimming is a means through which one can avoid the summer heat and get some exercise at the same time. So, it is a highly recommended activity for another couple of months to go. But, the condition of a swimming pool should be checked before diving in. Water which is not treated properly might lead to various summer-time diseases. If health safety is taken care of, a swimming pool will serve as the ultimate oasis this summer.
