Unions want strike days’ pay

POST REPORT

BIRATNAGAR, MAY 12 -
Three trade unions affiliated to different political parties have demanded that factory workers be paid their wages for the six days work stopped as a result of the general strike called by the UCPN (Maoist).

The Maoists had organised a nationwide shutdown from May 2 demanding that the prime minister step down.

The General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), the Trade Union Congress and the Madhesi Trade Union Forum, Nepal have opposed the "no work, no pay" system proposed by the private sector.

The workers have complained that the banda left them without food for their families as they lost their income during the strike.

Executive secretary of the Morang Merchant Association Shyam Bhandari said that the association had not decided whether the workers would be paid for the duration of the banda.

"The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry will make a final decision in this regard," he added.
