Demand for ginger up in int’l market

DHANKUTA, MAY 12 -
Nepali gingers are getting international market in the recent days that have prompted many farmers in Dhankuta to the ginger farming. Earlier, its consumption was confined within the local market for decades.

In the recent days, gingers are being export to India, Bangladesh and other countries too.  There is a huge demand in Indian markets

such as Siligudhi, Naxalbari, Delhi and the gingers are being exported to India through transit point of Kakadvitta, according to people involved in ginger exports.

According to District Agriculture Develo-pment Office (DADO), there is a cultivation of ginger in 165 hectares of land of the district.

Puspa Raj Paudel, agriculture publicity officer of DADO said that 1370 metric tons worth Rs. 41.1 million had already been exported this year out of total production of 1825 tons.

"We are really surprised by the sudden increase in demand for ginger besides other agro production."

Farmers are also very much encouraged by it, according to him.

Assistant Technician of DADO Nanda Kishor Adhikari said the cultivation of ginger has expanded in additional 5 hectares of land in the district with its rising demands.

Kamal Bhandari, a businessman based in Siligudhi said that at least 5 trucks of ginger are being exported on daily basis to the Indian markets from the main business spot Hile of the district.

The collection centre in Hile has collected 22 tons of ginger in the last one week.

Bhandari also said that he himself exported 10 trucks of ginger to Naxalbari, Kolkotta last week alone.  Harka Bahadur Rai, a farmer is pleased with traders visiting the villages for ginger.

Another trader Rajesh Shah said gingers are taken to a store in Dharan from Hile before exporting to Indian market." He said that 4 tons of ginger was being purchased on daily basis from the district.

The ginger farming has expanded to Jitpur, Parewadin areas in addition to traditional areas of ginger farming such as Ankhisalla, Chhintang, Aahale, Khoku, Mahabharat, Belhara etc as in the past.

A farmer Ram Bahadur Rai said that farmers' attraction increased on ginger farming as it a little effort is adequate for its farming and the gingers are sold easily.

Gopal Rai, a farmer from Chintang VDC has made savings from the income generated through ginger farming besides rearing up his three children and family's sustenance.
