EU take on addressing rights abuse

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, MAY 11 -
The government’s failure to act on human rights abuses in 2009 “undermined respect for the rule of law” and sustainable peace, reads a recent EU report.

Human Rights and Democracy in the World, a report on EU action between July 2008 and December 2009 released on Monday, stated that disappearances and widespread impunity were the issues of major concern in Nepal during the period.

“Year 2008 marked the transition of Nepal to democracy and the start of a peace process, which has yet to achieve the desired results,” reads the report’s Nepal chapter.” A delegation of EU officials, during its visit to Nepal on 8-9 Oct. 2009, stressed that failure to act on human rights abuses undermines respect for the rule of law, which in turn undermines sustainable peace.
