Rubber farming in Jhapa forests
JHAPA, MAY 10 -
Lured by lucrative income, community forests in Jhapa district are attracted towards rubber farming.
Six hectares of Adarsha community forest, Budhabare; nine hectares of Jamnuwadi forest, Surunga; and five hectares of Kalika community forest, Dhaijan, have been farmed, according to the District Forest Office, Jhapa. Rubber farming has a high income potential in the international market, though there is no market in Nepal.
Forest officials said rubber trees in all the three forests have grown into mature and the time for tapping the latex has arrived. Sushanta Dhakal, a local of Sanischare-1 who is into rubber farming, said the yield per hectare is 300 kilograms. He has planted rubber plants on 20 hectares of land.
Except the Nepali months of Falgun and Chaitra, income from rubber farming is regular throughout the remaining 10 months. Rubber produced here is sold in Biratnagar and Siligudi of India. People opted for rubber farming here after Gorakhali Rubber Factory came into operation.
