LAHAN, MAY 09 -
Some 43 landless families here have been earning a good income from the collective fishery they started last year with 20,000 fingerlings in a local pond.

Currently, 22,000 fingerlings of different species like bigheads, naini and bhocra are being raised in

the pond located at Bastipur

village development committee. The pond covers an area of 11 katthas and 11 dhurs.

According to Geni Lal Sadaya, a member of the Sunder Land Rights Forum, the forum is coordinating the landless people in fishery, caretaking and generating income. Color Ram, a local resident, said that they sold fish worth Rs. 25,000 in the first lot and deposited the money in the fund, while the rest of the fish were distributed among households during festivals.

The collected fund is being used to help members of the community. "Members get loans at an annual interest rate of 24 percent," said Chandreshowar Paswan, president of the Prabhat Land Rights Forum. "We are planning to open an agriculture cooperative in the near future with the fund."

The Dalit Protection Movement Forum is helping landless people in the community in their fish business. The forum had provided Rs. 20,000 through the District Forest and Land Protection Office.
