Respite in offing for drought-hit areas
SIRAHA, MAY 08 -
A groundwater irrigation system is in the offing as a relief package for drought-affected parts in Saptari, Siraha and Udayapur districts.
“We have identified places that depend on rainwater to irrigate the fields,” said Er. Shyam Singh at Groundwater Resources Development Board (GRDB) in Siraha, adding that shallow tube wells, deep tube wells and wells would be constructed in the areas.
In the first phase of the programme, the underground irrigation facilities are being constructed in Chandralalpur of Siraha and Tribeni, Katari and Tapeshwori of Udayapur.
The Board plans to spend an estimated Rs. 20 million to set up facilities to irrigate about 850 hectares of land. In Udaypur’s Tribeni and Katari, 30 wells are under construction while deep tube wells are being set up in Tapeshwori in the district. In Siraha’s Chandralalpur, shallow tube well construction is underway.
“Besides irrigation, these facilities will also fulfil the need of drinking water,” said Baidhyanath Prasad Chourasiya, GRDB chief.
People to utilise these facilities are now an elated lot. “We no more need to bring water from others’ wells or walk to a distant source for two hours for the purpose,” said Manamaya Danuwar, a resident of Katari-8. “The new wells close to our homes will solve the potable water problem,” she said.
