Journos attacked

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, MAY 05 -
UCPN (Maoist) cadres attacked and injured three journalists in different parts of the country on Wednesday.

Maoist activists thrashed Sudarshan Ghimire, assistant editor of Shikshak Monthly, near the Chinese Embassy in Baluwatar. He was heading towards Maharajgunj for news reporting. Ghimire, whose nose has been fractured and left eye badly damaged in the assault, is undergoing treatment at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Similarly, the Maoist activists attacked Gyanendra Niraula, correspondent of Purbanchal Daily in Kakadvitta, Jhapa, and Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) Surkhet correspondent Kashi Ram Sharma in Birendranagar.

The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has condemned the assaults on mediapersons by the Maoist cadres during its strike. Issuing a press statement, the FNJ expressed serious concern over  threats, intimidation and attacks on journalists.

The agitating main opposition had earlier committed to allowing vehicles belonging to diplomatic missions and press, among others, to ply during their indefinite general strike that began on Sunday.
