Diarrhoea-hit Rukum faces drug crisis
RUKUM, APR 26 -
Lack of medicines and shortage of health workers has exacerbated the situation in parts of Rukum affected by diarrhoea.
Diarrhoea is said to be spreading in those places where health institutions are either facing a shortage of health workers or are running out of medicines.
In Maikat, three days’ walking distance from the district headquarters Khalanga, the sub-health post wears a deserted look due to absence of health workers.
No different is the situation in Runmakot Village Development Committee. All health workers posted at the sub-health post there are out of station, said local Birbhan Bishwokarma.
A two-and-a-half years old child, Darshan Bishwokarma, succumbed to the disease a few days ago at Ranmakot for want of medicine. Birthan said patients in the VDC are desperately waiting for medicines. When asked, the Rukum District Health Office said health workers have been sent to the diarrhoea-hit areas with medicinies. Last year 56 people died when diarrhoea had broken out in the district.
