SAARC meet kicks off in Thimpu

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, APR 24 -
The 16th South Asian Association for Regional Corporation (SAARC) meeting officially kicked off on Saturday in Thimpu to finalise the agenda for the April 28-29 summit.

The 16th edition of SAARC takes place amid widespread apprehension in Nepal that Maoists and non-Maoists parties are on a collision course. In Kathmandu, the Summit will be  closely followed for what will not be discussed during the summit’s multi-lateral meeting and what Indian Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh will tell Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on the sidelines. New Delhi played an important role in bringing Maoists and non-Maoist parties to forge 12 points agreement in November, 2005.

On Saturday, the 38th session of the programming committee of the member states started with discussions on the agreement for cooperation on environment and the agreement on trade in services — both of which will be signed during the summit. The programming committee is also discussing poverty alleviation in the SAARC region, officials said.

The programming committee meeting will also discuss poverty alleviation in the SAARC region, officials said. Hari Kumar Shrestha, Joint Secretary at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is leading the Nepali delegation.  The resolutions of the programming committee will be placed before the two-day meeting of the SAARC standing committee starting on Sunday comprising foreign secretaries of member states. The resolutions of the standing committee will then go to the April 27th meeting of the SAARC council of ministers for finalisation of the agenda for the two-day summit which starts the following day. The 32nd Session of the SAARC Council of Ministers at Foreign Minister’s level will be held on 27th April and the 37th Session of the Standing Committee at Foreign Secretaries level will be convened from 25th to 26th April.
