Tension high in Valley colleges

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, APR 22 -
Tension ran high in various colleges on Thursday after police arrested Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) Vice President Bishnu Poudel for his alleged involvement in several clashes among students.

Police personnel in civvies detained Poudel, who is also accused of masterminding the attack on president of the CPN-UML-aligned All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) Samik Badal and three other ANFSU leaders with sharp-edged weapons on Tri-Chandra College premises on April 12.

Badal, who is currently undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Model Hospital, was critically injured in the attack. Poudel, however, has denied involvement in the incident. Following his arrest, NSU activists demonstrated outside Tri-Chandra, Shankar Dev, Padmakanya and Amrit Science colleges demanding Poudel’s immediate release.

The demonstrators also clashed with police at different places. At least one police personnel and six students were hurt in the melee.

The demonstrators pelted stones at police personnel while the latter lobbed teargas shells to disperse the mob. Police arrested two agitators for pelting stones.

Some agitators also pelted stones at Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha at Putalisadak. Shrestha escaped unhurt though his vehicle suffered minor damage. The flare-up continued until late afternoon.
