POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, APR 20 -
The number of Nepali workers leaving for foreign employment during the period mid-March to mid-April increased by 63.29 percent compared to the same period last year. The rise has been supported by increased demand from Malaysia and an improved economy in the major labour destinations after the global recession.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment, a total of 29,555 migrant workers including 15,326 women left the country for jobs abroad during the ninth month of the current fiscal year compared to 18,099 previously.

"Normally, the demand for Nepali workers goes up after March and lasts till July. This is the main reason behind the rise," said Kumud Khanal, general secretary of Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies (NAFEA). "However, the passport problem is stopping us from supplying the work force as demanded."

Similarly, compared to the first nine months of the last fiscal year, departures were up 15.25 percent to 202,794. Last year, 175,958 individuals had left the country to work abroad.

Foreign employment agents said that the trend of leaving the country for foreign employment had increased along with rising demand especially after the festive season. Departures had declined continuously for four consecutive months of the current fiscal year as a result of the festive season and the world recession.

Malaysia, which has emerged as the largest destination for Nepali workers, took in 68,876 persons, up from 31,513 last year. Similarly, Saudi Arabia absorbed 44,281 workers. Last year, the country had taken in 34,586 Nepali workers.

Likewise, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, the third and fourth largest destinations for Nepali workers, took in 42,535 and 25,628 individuals respectively.
