Nepal-Tibet trade talks soon

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, APR 19 -
Officials of Nepal and Tibet are to hold talks on problems related to border

trade at the first meeting of the Nepal-Tibet Trade Facilitation Committee (NTTFC) scheduled to start in Lhasa on April 21.

Chief of the Nepali delegation Surya Prasad Silwal, joint secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies, said that the meeting would identify the major problems and discuss ways to remove them.

Nepal will also raise the issue of infrastructure development on either side of the border, transaction of bilateral trade through banking system, easier visas for Nepali traders and opening of new trade points, officials said.

Nepal exports grain, wheat flour, sugar and jute bags to the Tibet Auto-nomous Region of China and imports raw wool, sheep, salt and yak and

yak tails.

Traders living in the border region can obtain a visa easily, but those from other parts of Nepal have difficulty in obtaining a Chinese visa. “We want that all our businessmen get Chinese visas easily and it will our one agenda,” Silwal said. China has increased vigilance on the movement of people across the border after violent protests erupted in Lhasa before the beginning of the Olympics in 2008.

The Nepali side will also seek Tibetan support to increase the number

of border trade points from the existing six

that include Tatopani, Rasuwa and Kimathanka, among others.
