Vulnerable neighbour

POST REPORT

RUKUM, APR 18 -
Neighbouring Rukum fears the disease might break out there as well. Twenty-five people died and over 1,000 had taken ill in the diarrhoea epidemic last year. Rukum is not ready to deal with a second round of the endemic and neither are its health centres which lack medicine stocks and manpower.

The impact would be devastating if there is a diarrhoea outbreak. Rukum's DPHO has made the hollow claim that it is on high alert to contain a possible outbreak of the disease. Meanwhile, Dadeldhura native Taradutta Awasthi, 70, died of diarrhoea at Belapur VDC-8 on Saturday night. Dozens more in the VDC have taken ill. Seven persons had died of diarrhoea there last year.
