Rawal sitting duck, again

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, APR 18 -
Home Minister Bhim Rawal, who has been a subject of constant criticism from all quarters for failing to maintain law and order in the country, faced yet another dressing down in the Parliamentary Party meeting of the CPN-UML on Sunday.

UML lawmakers blamed Rawal’s “rude behaviour” for the suicide of Digendra Rajbanshi, a veteran UML cadre. Rajbanshi committed suicide at the UML party headquarters on Saturday after Rawal refused to support him and land a job for his son.

In Sunday’s meeting, lawmakers Bisham Lal Danuwar, Shanta Chaudhary, Ram Rati Ram and Durga Pariyar said UML ministers are showcasing a bourgeois culture by crossing the proletariat thinking and behaviour limit.

“The home minister has made a mistake by not helping a poor party cadre. Why he is not serious about backward and poor people?” questioned UML lawmaker Bisham Lal Adhikari. “What is our party’s policy? To let cadres hang in party offices or improve their lifestyle?”

As the lawmakers piled pressure on the home minister, Rawal was compelled to clarify on the suicide incident.

“This is a serious issue. I had committed to provide him (Rajbanshi) financial assistance and a job for his son,” he said. “Unfortunately, he committed suicide.”

Shanta Chaudhary said the party will not be strong unless it looks into the demands of the landless, the labourers and the freed Kamaiyas.
