Cheer in offing for thirsty Kathmandu

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, APR 17 -
The promise of respite seems around the corner for the thirsty denizens of Kathmandu Valley, even though the much-vaunted Pre-Melamchi and Melamchi projects, supposed to douse the valley denizens’ world in 55 million litres of water per day (MLD) and 510 MLD, remain a far cry.

Among its plans to bore five tube wells in the valley, Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) is near done with the construction work in Singhadurbar, the government secretariat, the Ministers’ Quarters in Hariharbhawan and at Kalanki.  It plans to undertake construction work at the President’s Office in Maharajgunj and the Prime Minister’s Office in Baluwatar in a few days.

Given the location of most of these wells, it goes without saying that high ranking officials living in government quarters will be the first to benefit once the wells become operational. The KUKL will first supply tube well water to these places before filling up tankers that will distribute water to commoners.

At least 1 million litres of water will be extracted each day from each well, save the one in Kalanki, which can generate 300,000 litres of water per day.

KUKL deputy manager Tilak Mohan Bhandari said the sites for wells were chosen to utilise public land. “Buying private land requires huge sums of money and KUKL doesn’t have the wherewithal,” said Bhandari. Nevertheless, he assured that the project would benefit the general public. “Each place except Kalanki will consume hardly 40,000 litres of water per day. The rest of the extracted water will go to the general public,” said Bhandari.

KUKL says it has been supplying just 90 million litres of water per day in the valley against the daily requirement of over 320 million litres.
