Drought sends water table down
BIRATNAGAR, APR 16 -
The water table in Biratnagar Sub-metropolitan City and rural areas of Morang district has dropped low due to prolonged drought.
No water can be had from hand-pumps due to the drop in the underground water level. Earlier, water was being drawn up from 40 to 45 feet below the surface but now the water level has dropped to between 65 and 70 feet below the ground.
Ramavatar Giri who lives near Koshi Zonal Hospital complained that while water was earlier being drawn up from up from 45 feet below the ground now one has to dig as deep as 65 feet to strike water. Likewise Janak Das, a resident of Biratnagar Sub-metropolitan City-15, who said he is facing problems pumping water to his water tank from the tube-well.
Due to the drop in water level, most of the old tube-wells have to be shifted to new locations and dug deeper as well.
