Study to be done on corn disaster
KATHMANDU, APR 15 -
Research is to be conducted to find out what went wrong with the genetically modified corn seeds that produced sterile ears in five Tarai districts to the distress of farmers.
"If the study determines that the problem was bad seeds, the companies that supplied them will have to take the responsibility," said Hari Dahal, spokesperson of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
The Nepal Agricultural Research Council will conduct the research or request the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre to do it, Dahal said.
Government officials have been claiming that the maize seeds produced no corn because of cold temperatures and the impact of climate change. (PR)
