Sood meets Prachanda over upcoming Maoist protests
KATHMANDU, APR 14 -
The Indian Ambassador to Nepal Rakesh Sood visited UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday at the latter’s Naya Bazaar residence and expressed his concern about the party’s upcoming protests.
“The Indian envoy was concerned that the protests could fan anti-Indian sentiments here,” said Dahal’s aide Sameer Dahal. “But Chairman Prachanda assured him that his party always wanted to build good relations with India in the changed political context here.”
The Maoist party has planned a nationwide showdown on April 2 and May 1 demanding the change in government and “safeguarding national sovereignty.”
“We had nothing to hide regarding our approach and perspective towards India. We have made them public,” Sameer quoted the party chairman as telling Sood during the hour-long one-on-one.
Dahal also stressed that his party wanted “a paradigm shift” in relations with India, which would recognise the changed political context in Nepal.
After Nepal revoked the MRP deal with India, the Indian envoy had held a closed-door meeting with the prime minister on Tuesday in which he is said to have voiced strong displeasure on the MRP withdrawal.
