Living for tomorrow despite woes galore

Balkrishna Basnet

CHAME (MANANG), APR 14 -
Inconveniences posed by lack of development, limited state facilities and weak government presence are somethings the inhabitants of Manang district have learned to live with.

Despite dismal access to road access, proper schools and hospitals, among others, people here hope that the new constitution could prove stimulus for the district’s development. Once the new constitution comes into effect, locals believe, the national politics would improve thus ensuing the development works across the country, including their forgotten district.

“Deliver the new constitution on time. That’s our message to the leaders of our country,” said Man Bahadur Pariyar. Pariyar, a CPN-UML activist, said the growing uncertainty about statute drafting created by trust deficit among the political parties have worried the Manang folk.

Junukasi Gurung, sister of UCPN (Maoist) leader Dev Gurung, said political wrangling among parties at this juncture has hurt public sentiments and urged the parties to focus on the crucial issues--peace and constitution.

“If the constitution is drafted on time, many problems facing this country would be resolved,” she said.

Maoist district in-charge, Laxmi Lama, said the parties should not veer off from constitution writing. “We went through a huge bloodshed before arriving at this stage. The leaders must not let this opportunity go down the drain.”
