Rift in UML continues
KATHMANDU, APR 11 -
The Parliamentary Party (PP) meeting of CPN-UML which is supposed to take a concrete decision on the formation of a national consensus government was postponed for Monday.
PP members have been conflicted over whether to make the prime minister step down for a national consensus government or to continue with the incumbent government.
“The meeting has been called to make way for consensus politics and discussions are undergoing,” said Ishwor Pokharel, UML General Secretary. “All our efforts are for consensus politics. Let’s see what happens in the coming days.”
In Sunday’s meeting, PP members Ram Chandra Jha, Harka Bahadur Singh, and Sabitra Bhusal asked the prime minister to tender his resignation after failing to make headway in the statute-writing and the peace processes. They came down heavily against the prime minister saying that his ten-month tenure had failed to accelerate the peace process.
“The statue-making process is impossible in the absence of a consensus but the government itself has created hurdles to forge the consensus required. Therefore, the prime minister must make way for the sake of statute and peace,” said Singh, a UML Constituent Assembly (CA) member.
Those UML members supporting the prime minister have advised the prime minister to not hand over state power to the ‘anarchist Maoists’ unless the latter gives up its conflict hangover.
Kul Prasad Nepal, Bina Gywali, and Sher Bahadur Kunwar suggested the prime minister not to quit but instead to unite the parties to meet the May 28 deadline.
